Cyprus LFS unemployment rate climbs to 5.2% in Q2

The unemployment rate in Cyprus climbed to 5.2% in the second quarter, from 3.1% in the same quarter of 2008, according to the results of the EU-compatible quarterly Labour Force Survey.
The male unemployment rate was 4.9% and the female unemployment rate 5.5%.
Youth unemployment remained much higher than the average. The unemployment rate for those aged 15-24 amounted to 13.0% of the labour force in that age group, up from 7.1% in the second quarter of 2008 and 10% in the first quarter.
The total number of unemployed persons was 20,881 (males 10,990 and females 9,891).
Total employment in this period reached 382,899 (males 211,364 and females 171,535).
The employment rate for persons aged 15-64 was 70.2% (males 78.1% and females 62.7%), remaining at the same level as in the previous quarter, while it recorded a slight decrease from the corresponding quarter of 2008.
