Speaking at a press conference, Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot members of the Platform, announced that on Tuesday, September 1, two simultaneous marches will take place. The first will start from the Eleftherias Square in Nicosia, in the government controlled areas, and the other will start from the occupied areas of Nicosia. The two marches will meet at the Ledra Palace Hotel in the buffer zone. The event is organized and supported by 20 Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot organizations.

In a joint communique, the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot organizations note that the World Peace Day is a day when people from all communities, raise their voice for peace.

“Unfortunately, all Cypriots have suffered wars. The imperialistic forces have divided Cyprus in the basis of ethnic identity, causing racism and chauvinism. The fight between the communities brought nothing but blood, tears, and as a result the country is divided”, the communique adds.

Greek Cypriot co-organizer Pavlos Pavlou said that the event for World Peace Day has a special meaning this year because of the forthcoming commencement of the second phase of the direct negotiation process between the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, aiming in reaching a solution of the Cyprus problem.

Turkish Cypriot co-organizer Sener Elcil urged participants at the event to stress the need for peace and rapprochement between the two communities.

Peace talks are underway between the leaders of the two communities to find a negotiated settlement that would reunite the country, divided since the Turkish invasion of 1974.
