A helicopter contracted by the Electricity Authority of Cyprus to clean overhead power transmission cables, swerved violently due to sudden gusts of wind and crashed to the ground. Both members of the crew escape, one of them slightly injured.
The accident happened at 10am near the Moni power station, on the southern coast, as the helicopter crew were in mid-air cleaning of the 132KV Moni-Vassiliko transmission cable.
The EAC said, in an announcement, that the helicopter cut the power transmission cable, but electricity transmission was not interrupted.
The whole cleaning process using pressurized water and air takes place once a year to rid the power cables of layers of dust accumulated over time. The contracted helicopter company is selected based on international tenders.
