Mediterranean Games conclude – Cyprus wins 8 medals

The XVI Mediterranean Games in Pescara, Italy, concluded on Sunday evening with the closing ceremony starting from the “Stadio del Mare” continuing in the streets of Pescara, and ending with a beach party.

The Cypriot team, which comprised 69 athletes, secured 12th position in the medals table of the Games among 23 countries. Cyprus won eight medals in Pescara, three gold, four silver and one bronze. It was the best participation by a Cyprus delegation in the Mediterranean Games.

Kyriakos Ioannou in high jump, Eleni Artymata at 200m in Athletics and Anastasia Christoforou in swimming secured gold medals. Demetris Minasides, Giorgos Achilleos and Marianna Zacharade secured silver medals and Eleni Artimata won a bronze medal.

In the 2005 Almeria Games, Cyprus won one gold, four silver and two bronze medals. Greece, with 64 medals (19 gold, 14 silver and 31 bronze) ranked fifth. Italy secured first place in the medals table with 176 medals (64 gold, 49 silver and 63 bronze).

Pavlos Kontides was the flag-bearer of the Cypriot team in the closing event, which started from the “Stadio del Mare”, passed through the streets of the city of Pescara and concluded with a great beach party.

The XVII Mediterranean Games 2013 will take place in the Greek cities of Volos and Larissa.
