The Conservative Party's Shadow Minister for Europe, Mark Francois MP, was on a three-day working visit to Cyprus, during which he met President Demetris Christofias and other leading politicians, to assess progress on the talks aimed at reaching a settlement in Cyprus.
During his visit to the island Mark Francois also met with House President Marios Garoyian, House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Averof Neophytou and Constantinides, Permanent Secretary at the Foreign Ministry. To hear a Turkish Cypriot perspective on the talks Mark also met with Ozdil Nami, the chief advisor to the Turkish Cypriot leader during the current process.
Mark Francois visited the British High Commissioner to Cyprus, Peter Millett and dined at his residence with members of the Greek Cypriot community and also met with British service personnel serving with the U.N., as well as with Alexander Downer, the former Australian Foreign Minister and now UN special representative to Cyprus.
"I was pleased to visit the island and to be briefed in detail on the progress of the talks. When President Christofias came to London last summer, to sign the Memorandum of Understanding between Cyprus and the UK, he met with David Cameron, William Hague, Theresa Villiers and myself. I was happy to have the chance to follow this up by seeing him again, where I expressed my hope that both he and Mr Talat could make further progress in the talks,” said Mark Francois.
“This is clearly a complex issue, but during my trip I sensed the possibility of an agreement and I hope that given a positive attitude on both sides, including I hope in Ankara as well, this process might yet come to a successful conclusion."
