The result of the illegal elections in Cyprus’ northern Turkish occupied areas will not affect the ongoing direct negotiating process, aiming at finding a comprehensive settlement to the Cyprus problem, Krisztina Nagy, spokesperson of the EU Commissioner for Enlargement, has said.

Called to comment on the result of the “elections”, Nagy said that “Mehmet Ali Talat is the Turkish side’s representative at the negotiations, for the solution of the Cyprus problem. He has been elected with the clear prospect to solve the political problem, his term in office ends in April 2010”.

The Turkish Cypriot National Unity Party (UBP) of Dervis Eroglu gathered 44,02% of the vote, winning 26 of the 50 “seats” in the so-called parliament. The party Talat has led until recently, the Republican Turkish Party (CTP), now led by Ferdi Sabit Soyer, got 29,29% of the vote and won 15 “seats”.
