Cyprus crowned World Champion in School Football

Cyprus was crowned Sunday world champion in the World Schools Championship 2009 that took place in Antalya, Turkey, 5 – 13 April.

The Cypriot team beat South Africa 4-1 in the final game and was crowned world champion “thus achieving one of the greatest successes not only for school sports but for Cypriot sportw in general”, a press release by the Ministry of Education and Culture says.

Cyprus beat Germany 4-1 in the quarter-finals and Denmark in the semi-finals with the same score.

The participating countries were Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, China, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iran, Israel, Italy, Luxembourg, Poland, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Sweden, Turkey and the Ukraine.

The championship was organised according to International School Sport Federation competition rules and with the support of the Turkish School Sport Federation and the city of Antalya.
