A combination of cultural habits and hot summers mean that few Cypriots would consider walking to work.
However, more Cypriots walk than one might think, according to the Passenger Mobility survey on short distances (less than 100 km).
According to the survey, 78.5% of the households have members who walk. However, the Statistical Service adds that this is usually for leisure purposes.
Still, in a country with barely any public transport, a fairly high proportion of 19.8 % use public transport.
The survey shows that 91.7% of households own and use motorised modes of transport, while 12.7% of households own and use non-motorised transport.
A slightly different picture emerges when the data are recorded according to the number of trips. Here, 84.4% of the total number of trips were made by motorised transport, 14.5% by non-motorised transport and only 1.1 % of the trips were made by public transport.
In other words, even if almost one in five people use public transport occasionally, this accounts for only a tiny minority of actual trips.
The survey was carried out in May – July 2008, with the objective to provide statistics on personal travel by all transport modes during workdays and weekends.
The majority of the trips made were made for leisure purposes (51.8%). Fewer trips were made for shopping (14.8%) and travelling to work (14.5%).
The average travel distance was 11.0 km and the average trip time was 16.3 minutes. Trips made by public transport modes lasted on average 12.9 minutes, those made by motorised vehicles (16.4 minutes) and those with non-motorised transport 15.5 minutes.
Public transportation has on average the highest distance coverage per trip (13.3 km) followed by motorized transport with 12.7 km per trip.
