British MP Andy Love has said that Turkey is the main reason for the non – solution of the Cyprus problem so far and urged Ankara to engage itself in the Cyprus process which began between the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus with a view to reach a solution of the Cyprus problem.

The British MP, who was addressing an event, organised in London by the Cypriot Social Democrats Party (EDEK) pointed out that Britain and the US could contribute to the process as well.

“Turkey states it supports the process. Since they state that, they should engage themselves in the whole effort”, he noted.

Furthermore, the Labour MP said that “Ankara is the basic reason for the non solution and should engage in the process. Britain and the US can contribute to that direction”.

Andy Love expressed the view that the negotiations, which are held between the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, create internationally a climate for the need to reach a solution of the Cyprus problem.

He also said “I am the first to acknowledge that the talks do not proceed as we would like them to proceed but with their continuation pressure is exerted on Britain, the EU, the UN and the international community”.

Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat began last September direct negotiations with a view to reach a solution of the Cyprus problem.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied its northern third.
