Cyprus beat Portugal with 3-2 in a tie for the first round of the Davis Cup's Europe/Africa Zone Group II

The victory secured Cyprus' stay in the Group.

In the second round, Cyprus will face next July Ireland which defeated Algeria.

The tie took in place in Cyprus' National Tennis Centre in Nicosia.

On Friday, the first day of the tie, Cyprus and Portugal finished equal 1-1, while on Saturday Cyprus took the lead by wining the decisive doubles match. Yesterday Marcos Baghdatis secured Cyprus' victory by defeating Frederico Gil with 3-0 (6-2, 7-5 and 6-2).

Davis Cup ties include 5 games. The winning team must secure three victories.
