Cypriot industry spends 0.3% of GDP on environment

Cypriot industry spent 0.3% of gross domestic product (GDP) on environmental expenditure in 2007 according to the results of a survey carried out by the Statistical Service, compared with an EU average of 0.4%.
Total expenditure for environmental protection activities in industry in 2007 is estimated at EUR 41.5 mln, or 0.27% of GDP, compared to EUR 29.5 mln or 0.20% in 2006. Expenditure in the member-states of the EU is estimated at 0.44% of GDP.
The growth is largely attributed to higher capital expenditure in the cement industry.
By sector of economic activity, the manufacturing industries reported expenditures of EUR 38.1 mln, the mining and quarrying industries EUR 2.9 mln and the electricity and water enterprises EUR 0.5 mln.
In the manufacturing sector, where the largest amount of expenditure is reported, manufacturing of other non-metallic mineral products accounts for EUR 18.6 mln, manufacturing of food products and beverages for EUR 10.6 mln and manufacturing of wood and products of wood (except furniture) for EUR 3.0 mln.
By environmental domain, expenditure related to: the reduction of air emissions EUR 19.0 mln, the monitoring, treatment and disposal of waste EUR 10.7 mln, the treatment of waste water EUR 8.8 mln, the protection of soil and ground water and the protection of natural resources and biodiversity EUR 2.5 mln and the abatement of noise and vibrations EUR 0.5 mln.
