Minister of the Interior Neoclis Sylikiotis has underlined the importance of foreign investment in Cyprus, saying that Russian investors are interested in setting up an international tennis school in Cyprus.

Apart from the Russians, interest in investing in Cyprus has been shown lately by businessmen in Quatar and Iran, he added.

Invited to comment on press reports, according to which Russian businessmen are interested in investing in the coastal town of Paphos to set up an international tennis school, he said he had already met with the interested investors adding that the issue is now in the hands of the town planning bureau.

“An effort will be made to set up an international tennis school in Cyprus so that young talents, from Russia and other countries, can come here to learn, following the standards of other similar schools abroad”, he explained.

He added that Cyprus was selected for this investment partly due to its favorable climate.

This investment, he said, would help boost construction industry as well as tourism.

“This development shows that Cyprus, an EU member state, offers healthy economy and banking system foundations”, he noted.

The Minister also referred to Quatar’s interest in investment in Cyprus, saying that the government is endorsing such investments, bearing in mind the benefits it would bring in easing the impact of the world economic crisis.

Sylikiotis said that the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Antonis Paschalides, will visit Iran and among other issues he will discuss the interest shown lately by many Iranian businessmen to invest in Cyprus.
