Registrations of motor vehicles rose by 5.2% in 2008, according to the latest figures from the Statistical Service.
This was much lower than the 33.1% increase recorded in 2007. However, that was a result of changes in taxes that encouraged a surge in sales.
Monthly data show that car registrations have been a little volatile on a monthly basis. For example, they fell by 15.8% in November but rose by 17.1% in December.
Saloon cars did not fare as well as commercial vehicles. Registrations of saloon cars rose by only 1.2%, whereas sales of heavy goods vehicles rose by 21.4% and motorcycles by 19.1%.
Registrations of new cars rose by 2.4% in 2008, whereas those of used cars rose by 8.2%.
