Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs Marcos Kyprianou wrapped up a series of visits to South American countries with an official visit to Brazil, where he held talks with his Brazilian counterpart Celso Amorim on Wednesday.

The two Ministers discussed the relations between their two countries, the situation in the Middle East, the relations of Brazil with the EU, the global financial crisis, the reform of the United Nations, and other issues of mutual interest.

They also examined the prospects of commercial and economic cooperation, as well as cooperation in the sector of shipping, and discussed the possibility of strengthening the cooperation between their Ministries and intensifying contacts on a diplomatic level.

Kyprianou briefed Amorim on the process of direct talks to solve the Cyprus problem, and took the opportunity to express his appreciation for the participation of Brazilian troops in the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP).

Furthermore, Amorim accepted an invitation extended by Kyprianou to visit Cyprus.

Kyprianou conveyed a message in writing on behalf of President of the Republic Demetris Christofias to the President of Brazil.

After the meeting, Amorim hosted a dinner in honour of Kyprianou and the Cypriot delegation.
