A total of eight thousand five hundred sixteen Nicosia residents participated in the municipal referendum to decide the fate of the capital’s old stadium, GSP. As it was noted during a press conference, given the fact that this is the first municipal referendum ever organized in Cyprus, participation to it has been very satisfying.
Nicosia Municipality has pledged that it will promote the choices of its citizens, so that they will be implemented during the planning for the reconstruction of the GSP.
The referendum was conducted with the method of questionnaires, on seven issues, that were sent by mail. According to the results of the referendum, Nicosia residents prefer a few buildings, open spaces and facilities for the pedestrians in the old GSP space.
The proposal for the construction of a very high building in part of the space of the GSP was rejected by 65%, while 29% voted in favour of this proposal.
Speaking during the presentation of the results, Nicosia Mayor Eleni Mavrou said that the response, the interest and the participation of Nicosia citizens to the referendum was particularly encouraging.
A total of 36,606 envelopes were dispatched to all municipal registered voters. A total of 8.516 questionnaires were completed and returned, while 3.282 were returned with the indication “unknown sender”.
Mavrou said the Municipal Council would assess the results of the referendum during its next meeting. The government to which the Municipality will present the positions of its citizens will take the final decisions.
