Cypus Communists to elect new Secretary General in January

AKEL (Progressive Party of the Working People) is set to elect its new Secretary General on January 21st, who will replace current Secretary General and President of the Republic Demetris Christofias.

The Secretariat of the Central Committee of AKEL will propose to the party Political Bureau that the Central Committee plenary meets on 21st of January to elect the new party leader.

The decision was taken by the Secretariat of AKEL Central Committee on Wednesday, during a meeting chaired by the party Secretary General Christofias.

According to a written statement, read by party Spokesman Andros Kyprianou, the Secretariat of the Central Committee decided that the Political Bureau, which will announce the election procedure for the new Secretary General, will convene on 13 January, as prescribed by the party charter and regulations.

President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias, who won the February 2008 presidential elections, is the General Secretary of the leftwing AKEL party and became the party’s first head of state.
