Personal and social services employs 32,538 in Cyprus

The Statistical Service has announced the publication of the annual report, Economic Statistics on Other Social and Personal Service Activities, for the year 2006.
The report provides data on the number of establishments, employment, labour costs and other expenses, gross output, value added and data for the expenditure on fixed assets.
The main developments were as follows.
During 2006, value added for the sector of “Other Social and Personal Service Activities” increased in real terms by 3.8% compared with 3.4% in 2005.
At current market prices, value added in 2006 increased by 7.1% to CYP 361.9 mln (EUR 618.3 mln) compared to CYP 338.0 mln (EUR 577.5 mln) in 2005 and its contribution to GDP was 4.6% in 2006, the same as in 2005. Gross output increased by 7.8% to CYP 524.0 mln (EUR 895.4 mln) from CYP 485.9 mln (EUR 830.3 mln) in 2005.
In the private sector, the most important contribution to the total value added was generated through recreational, culture and sporting activities 40.4%, private households as employers of domestic staff 21.2% and other service activities 20.3%. In the public sector, the most important contribution to the total value added was generated through the museum activities and preservation of historical sites and buildings 48.1% and the other sporting activities 24%.
Employment in the sector of other social and personal service activities increased by 6.6% in 2006 compared to the previous year and reached 32.538 persons, accounting for 8.4% of the total economically active population and 9.1% of the total gainfully employed population.
Gross fixed capital formation in 2006 increased by 22.6% to CYP 63.2 mln (EUR 108.0 mln) from CYP 51.5 mln (EUR 88.0 mln) in 2005. Investment in new buildings accounted for CYP 40.9 mln (EUR 69.9 mln), in machinery and equipment CYP 16.5 mln (EUR 28.2 mln), in furniture and fixtures CYP 4.0 mln (EUR 6.8 mln) and in transport equipment CYP 1.8 mln (EUR 3.1 mln).
