One-quarter of Cypriot children go to private school

Just over one-quarter of primary and secondary school pupils are educated at private schools in Cyprus, according to the annual report, “Statistics of Education” for the school year 2006/07.
The report provides detailed information regarding the number of educational institutions, pupils/students, teaching and non-teaching personnel and expenditure, at each level of education, as well as Cypriot students abroad.
The main data included in the report are as follows.
At all levels of education, there were 1,258 educational institutions, 172,361 pupils/students and 15,213 teachers, giving a pupil/teacher ratio of 11.3.
Of the total number of pupils/students, 74.2% were enrolled in public schools and 25.8% in private schools.
The enrolments of pupils/students by level of education were as follows: pre-school and pre-primary 26,508, primary 57,492, secondary 65,790, tertiary 22,227 and special education 344.
Cypriot students abroad totalled 21,188. Τheir distribution by level of education was as follows.
Tertiary non-university 801 or 3.8%, tertiary university undergraduate
18,053 or 85.2%, tertiary postgraduate (Master’s) 1,849 or 8.7% and doctoral (Ph.D)
485 or 2.3%.
The most popular fields of study were: business and administration 12.4%, health 10.1%, engineering 10.1%, humanities 10.0%, social and behavioural sciences 9.8% and teacher training and education science 7.2%.
The main countries of study were: Greece 63.1%, United Kingdom 26.6%, U.S.A. 2.7%, Bulgaria 2.2%, Hungary 1.1%, France 0.8%, and Russian Federation 0.5%.
Public expenditure in public and private education for year 2006 stood at EUR 1,017.8 (â?¤595.7) million, for all levels.
The current public cost per pupil/student in public schools by level of education was as follows: pre-school and pre-primary EUR 4,909 (â?¤2,749), primary EUR 4,976 (â?¤2,486), special EUR 38,975 (â?¤22,275), secondary EUR 7,916 (â?¤4,187) and tertiary EUR 17,180 (â?¤8,192). The cost per student abroad was EUR 4,082 (â?¤2,389).
