Cyprus’ main international airport at Larnaca now has a bus service with three different operators linking it to the main towns. The decision was taken by the government last week to help locals and visitors travel cheaply to and from the airport.
The cost of the bus service to Nicosia, operated by Kapnos Airport Shuttle and InterCity Buses, is five euros.
The Larnaca – Limassol trip starts Wednesday by EAL and will cost seven euros, but the InterCity Buses fare is five euros. InterCity also operates the Larnaca airport route to Protaras and Ayia Napa for five euros. The cost of the Larnaca – Paphos route has not yet been determined.
Communications and Works Minister Nikos Nikolaides said that the overwhelming majority of Cypriots (95%) had asked for such a service, as an alternative to the taxi service, which is more costly.
“This bus service is not going to affect the taxi services at Larnaca airport,” he assured taxi drivers.
According to a government survey, 60% of Cypriots travel to and from Larnaca airport in a private vehicle, 26% use their own car and use the airport car park and another 15% get there in their car which they leave in places outside the airport car park. Only 6% use a taxi to get to the airport.
The Minister dismissed a demand by the taxi drivers to operate the bus service less frequently every 2 to 3 hours, saying this would not serve the public.
The bus service, he explained, will run in coordination with the flights arrivals and departures at Larnaca airport.
In a joint announcement, the hoteliers associations Pasyxe and STEK, and the Association of Cyprus Travel Agents hailed the decision to license the airport shuttle services as this will help reduce car emissions and cut down on traffic congestion and accidents, but added that more should be done as in other airports around the world, including airport express services, special urban and rural bus stops, etc.
