New Deputy Attorney General Akis Papasavvas assured on Tuesday that he would do everything possible to meet the expectations and safeguard the rights of the people of Cyprus.

President of the Republic Demetris Christofias, before whom Papasavvas was sworn in at a ceremony at the Presidential Palace, said the new Deputy Attorney General was taking over the post at a very important period for Cyprus.

He added that the protection of the rights and dignity of the citizens was necessary for the smooth operation of the Republic and its institutions.

The President noted that the Republic of Cyprus had a duty to be especially sensitive to observing democratic procedures and that, within the new EU environment, the Cypriot legal system was under continuous influence.

Referring to Papasavvas, President Christofias said he had no doubt that he would honour his mission, based on his life experience, his deep-rooted democratic sense and his unwavering dedication to the principles of democracy.

Papasavvas thanked the President for appointing him and referred to their longstanding friendship and mutual appreciation, adding that he was well aware of the visions and expectations of President Christofias, which filled him with responsibility.
