Karoyan likely to become new Cyprus House President

The House of Representatives plenary will elect the new President of the parliament on Thursday, after Demetris Christofias was elected President of the Republic. DIKO President Marios Karoyan is widely expected to be become the new President of the House after his party joined the government of Christofias in a grand coalition that also includes the socialist EDEK.
A candidate needs 50% plus one vote to be elected President of the House. If no candidate secures this percentage, a second election is held and the candidate to secure two fifths of the votes is elected. If again no candidate secures the necessary number of votes, then a third election is held and the candidate with the most votes is elected.
The plenary session will be president over by President of the Democratic Rally Nicos Anastasiades.
The four new AKEL MPs to be sworn in are Claudius Mavrohannas, Skevi Koukouma Koutra, Stella Mishiaouli and Yiannakis Gabriel, who will be taking the respective seats previously held by Demetris Christofias who was elected President of the Republic, Costas Papacostas who has been appointed Minister of Defence, Kypros Chrysostomides who has been appointed Minister of Justice and Public Order and Sotiroulla Charalambous who has been appointed Minister of Labour and Social Insurance.
