Cyprus cattle slaughter falls in 2007

The number of adult cattle slaughtered in Cyprus fell by 6.3% in the whole of 2007 to 17,348; the number of goats, sheep and lambs slaughtered rose by 2.5% to 416,043 according to figures from the Statistical Service.

The number of poultry in the same period rose by 7.4% to 14,239,381.

Eggs of cocks, hens and chickens placed in incubation for hatching fell by 5.4% to 1,439.

Production of cowsmilk rose by 3.8% to 143.7m tonnes in the whole of 2007.

In the period January-October 2007 the production of drinking milk from cows rose by 2.2% to 68,070 tonnes compared with the same period of 2006; the production of cream rose by 3% to 3,100 tonnes; the production of acidified milk rose by 10.1% to 5,050 tonnes; the production of butter fell by 13.2% to 330 tonnes and the production of cheese from cowsmilk only (ie, not the Cypriot speciality, halloumi) rose by 0.8% to 1,320 tonnes.
