Cyprus healthcare expenditure at 6.3% of GDP in 2006

Large increase in number of surgical operations

 

 Expenditure of health services during 2006 was 6.3% of GDP, compared with 6.0% of GDP in 1998, according to the annual report “Health and Hospital Statistics” from the Statistical Service.

By value expenditure on healthcare is estimated at CYP 529.8 mln of which CYP 264.0 mln represented expenditure of the public sector and CYP 265.8 mln of the private sector.

The main developments in 2006 were as follows.

57,540 patients were admitted for treatment and discharged from the general hospitals, during 2006 compared with 57,887 in 2005, recording a decrease of 0.6%.

The disease category, “Injury, poisonings and certain other consequences of external causes” had the highest share of in-patients, at 14%, followed by diseases of the digestive system with 10.2%, the circulatory system with 9.8% and the respiratory system with 9.5%.

Surgical operations performed on in-patients recorded an increase of 25.9% over the previous year and reached 30,300.

General surgery accounted for 20.9% of all operations performed on in-patients, operations of orthopaedic 16.4%, of cardiology 11.7%, of medical 9.4% and operations of gynaecology-maternity 9.2%.

Out-patient attendances decreased by 0.8% over the previous year, reaching 1,527,937, of which 64.2% represented attendances at general hospitals.

During 2006 a total of 362,949 patients visited the Casualty Departments of the general hospitals, recording an increase of 2.5% over the previous year.
