Cypriot Member of the European Parliament Marios Matsakis announced his intension to run for the presidential elections in February 2008. Speaking at a press conference Matsakis described a solution of the Cyprus problem based on a bizonal-bicommunal federation as ”unacceptable”.
He said he would fight for a unified state but if the Turkish-side rejects this option, “the second best solution for Cyprus is the creation of two states with some territorial adjustments”, he said.
Current Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos, House of Representatives President and General Secretary of left-wing AKEL Demetris Christofias, former Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides, and former Agriculture Minister Costas Themistocleous have already announced their decision to run for the presidency in February.
