Cyprus had 20,969 students abroad in 2005/06

The Statistical Service Cystat announced the publication of the annual report “Statistics of Education” for the school year 2005/06.

The report provides detailed information regarding the number of educational institutions, pupils/students, teaching and non-teaching personnel and expenditure, at each level of education, as well as Cypriot students abroad.

The main data included in the report are as follows.

At all levels of education, there were 1,252 educational institutions, 172,573 pupils/students and 14,747 teachers, giving a pupil/teacher ratio of 11.7.

Of the total number of pupils/students, 75.3% were enrolled in public schools and 24.7% in private schools.

The enrolments of pupils/students by level of education were as follows: Pre-primary 26,557, Primary 59,401, Secondary 65,660, Tertiary 20,587 and Special education 368.

Cypriot students abroad totalled 20,969.

The most popular fields of study were: social and behavioural sciences 10.4%, Humanities 10.4%, Business and Administration 12.5%, Health 10.6%, Engineering 10.2%, Teacher training and Education science 7.3% and Computing 5.9%.

The main countries of study were: Greece 64.2%, United Kingdom 23.6%, U.S.A. 3.6%, Hungary 1.2%, Russian Federation 0.7%, Bulgaria 2.5% and Germany 0.8%.
