Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has expressed his country’s support to UN efforts to find a just solution to the Cyprus problem.

The Iranian President made the statement during the presentation of the credentials of Cyprus’ new Ambassador to Iran, George Lykourgos, earlier this month.

An official statement said that Lykourgos briefed the Iranian President on the Cyprus problem.

Ahmadinejad noted the friendly relations between the two countries and assured that he will continue to work for their continued improvement.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied the island’s northern third.
