Cypriot and Chinese officials to strengthen bilateral cooperation

Cyprus House President Demetris Christofias and Vice-Minister of the Ministry of Culture of the People’s Republic of China Meng Xiaosi expressed Tuesday their common desire for further strengthening bilateral cooperation in all fields.

Christofias met the Chinese official, who is paying an official visit to Cyprus, heading a five-member delegation.

According to a House press release, Christofias commended the close cooperation and the traditional friendship ties between the Republic of Cyprus and the People’s Republic of China.

He said that relations between the two countries are based on mutual support, respect and solidarity. He expressed the gratitude of the people of Cyprus for the support provided by China to the struggle of the Cyprus people for the island’s reunification.

Both Cyprus and China, the House President said, have a very old civilisation, history and tradition which is world heritage for all humanity.

Christofias also referred to the Cyprus problem and condemned Turkey’s attempts to promote the creation of two separate states in Cyprus, underlying that Cyprus is struggling to defend the principles of the UN Charter and international and European law, with a view to achieve its reunification and the termination of the illegal Turkish occupation.

Meng thanked Christofias for the steady support which Cyprus offers to the policy of one China. She reiterated her country’s support to the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus.
