The first application for a “green card”, filed by a national of a third country, who has been living continuously in Cyprus for the past five years, was submitted.
Minister of the Interior Christos Patsalides was briefed today at the Immigration Department about the new procedure for the submission of applications for long-term residency by third country nationals, noting that the issue is top priority for the government.
“As a state, we support legal immigration and respect the human rights of all immigrants”, the Minister told reporters, noting that what worries the government is illegal immigration, which not only causes economic and social problems, but also results in racism and xenophobia.
He also said that first impressions as to the implementation of the new procedure to obtain the status of a long – term resident or “green card” are very positive, adding that the new measure is in force as part of harmonisation with the relevant EU Directive.
The examination of each application will be very strict with a view to take a decision within three to four months, the Minister said, noting Cyprus’ peculiarities, such as its small size and its geographical location as a “border of the European Union and a gate to illegal immigrants”.
Since Monday 19 November, when the new procedure was put in force, around 100 people have obtained the application form.
