The European Commission has joined forces with Euro-toques, the European association of chefs, to teach children about the importance of having a balanced diet, with the first event on healthy food and cooking taking place at the Peristerona primary school in Nicosia District at 10am on Thursday.

By organising fun workshops with top-level chefs in several European countries the Commission aims to develop an interest amongst European children in healthy eating and cooking.

The European Day of Healthy Food and Cooking aims to raise awareness among children about the basic principles of good nutrition. If children learn to enjoy cooking, eat healthily and exercise regularly from an early age, they are much more likely to continue such practices in adulthood. This, in turn, could contribute to lowering obesity levels in Europe, as the adults of the future would be more aware of the need for a balanced diet and physical activity.

In Cyprus all primary schools are going to get involved on the celabrations for the European Day of Health Food and Cooking. The events are organized in cooperation with the Ministry of Education. The official school chosen was Peristerona primary school where a Cypriot European Commission official (George Stylianou) and the EuroToques President in Cyprus (Panayiotis Hadjisymeou) taking part in the event.

The aims is to teach children useful tips on healthy eating and how they can prepare a healthy meal themselves.
