The Cyprus House of Representatives Plenary has unanimously approved a bill incorporating into local legislation the provisions of a European Union act concerning trade in certain objects which can be used for capital punishment or degrading treatment or punishment.
The new legislation defines the rules governing trade with third countries (non EU member-states) regarding items which can be used to carry out capital punishment or torture or other harsh, degrading or inhumane treatment.
These rules, as it was stressed during the plenary session, will contribute decisively to respect of human life and fundamental human rights.
They will also secure that EU financial bodies will not benefit from trade which either promotes or facilitates policy on capital punishment or torture or other punishment, which is not in line with EU norms.
