Cyprus captain missing after ship sinks in Greece

The Cypriot captain of a Greek-registered cargo ship carrying coal, the Diamond One, went missing Wednesday after another vessel crashed into the ship causing it to sink one nautical mile outside of the port of Thessaloniki.

The Panama-flagged vessel Dubai Guardian collided with the Diamond 1 at 1150 local time (0850 GMT) and the latter sank, a merchant marine ministry official was quoted by news sources as saying.

News reports suggested that the seven remaining crew were rescued but the Cypriot captain refused to abandon his ship. It was not yet clear why the ships collided.
