Cyprus MPs in parliamentary meetings in Geneva, Lisbon

A House of Representatives delegation will be taking part in the 117th session of the Intergovernmental Union, which begins in Geneva on Monday.

The meeting will deal with the role of parliaments in creating a balance between national security and personal freedoms, the parliamentary monitoring of state policy on developmental assistance, foreign workers, the illegal trafficking of persons, xenophobia, human rights and the setting up of a new committee that will deal with UN issues.
Leading the Cypriot delegation are opposition DISY/EPP leader Nicos Anastasiades, and MPs Takis Hadjigeorgiou, Nicos Kleanthous and Athena Kyriakidou.

Meanwhile, the president of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and DISY vice-president Averof Neophytou is in Lisbon for the meeting of the Presidents of Foreign Affairs Committees of EU member states, the European Parliament and the candidate countries.

The meeting is being held in the context of the rotating EU presidency and will be addressed by the President of the European Commission, the High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, the Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Portugal, and the Development Commissioner.

The focus will be on European foreign policy, the development policy and the Portuguese presidency priorities.
