EC Transport Commissioner Barrot in Cyprus for maritime conference

The Vice President of the European Commission and Commissioner for Transport, Jacques Barrot, arrives in Cyprus late Saturday to attend and address the Maritime Cyprus conference to be held in Limassol.

According to the European Commission Representation in Cyprus, Commissioner Barrot will have a meeting on Sunday with the Minister of Communications and Works, Ms. Maria Malachtou-Pamballi, and the two are expected to discuss maritime matters of mutual interest.

The Ministry of Transport is the responsible office in charge of the Department of Merchant Shipping, the regulator and registrar of Cyprus-flag ships around the world.

On Sunday evening Jacques Barrot will attend the opening ceremony of the maritime conference where the Minister will present the Cyprus Maritime Prize 2007 for 2007.

On Monday, the Commissioner will deliver a keynote address at the conference on the “EU’s View on Shipping: New Image” and later in the afternoon leave Cyprus to return to his other duties.
