President Tassos Papadopoulos will seek re-election in next February’s presidential elections in Cyprus.

This was revealed by Yiannakis Omerou, leader of the Social Democrats EDEK party, after a meeting at the Presidential Palace that marked the end of the three-party government coalition.

President Papadopoulos elected President of the Cyprus Republic in February 2003 with the votes of the left-wing AKEL party, centre-right Democratic Party and Social Democrats EDEK Party.

The Democratic Party and EDEK have already announced their support to Papadopoulos while AKEL has proposed its General Secretary and current President of the House of Representatives Demetris Christofias as a candidate for the next presidential elections.

Christofias failed to convince his government partners to run as a common candidate.
