Cyprus Foreign Minister Yiorgos Lillikas has described Turkey “a serious source of instability in the region”, warning that the country’s bid to join the European Union could be at risk if it does not shift its position.

Speaking on departure for Brussels, to attend the European Council meeting, he welcomed Cyprus’ success in efforts to join the euro zone, which was approved on Wednesday by the European Parliament and is expected to be endorsed by the Council later today.

“Joining the euro area is a very important economic and political objective, which we have accomplished, which after our EU membership in May 2004 is the most important political achievement for the Republic of Cyprus,” Lillikas said.

He noted that the adoption of the euro in January 2008 will have very positive impact on the economy and society at large but also positive political fallout.

Responding to questions, the Minister dismissed Turkey’s claims that Cyprus is a destabilising factor in the region and that the government does not represent the entire island.

“The Republic of Cyprus is internationally recognized and participates in world organizations as the legal state on this island. Turkey cannot dictate who or what the government of the Republic represents,” he stressed.

Lillikas pointed out that such behaviour on the part of Ankara takes the country further away from the EU.

“Turkey is a serious destabilising factor in our region, something reflected in its behaviour not only towards Cyprus but also towards its neighbours, it is the only nation with serious political problems with its neighbours,” he added.

If this approach does not change, he warned, Turkey’s European aspirations may face problems and add to criticism of Ankara about its eligibility to join the Union.

Commenting on warnings by Turkey’s powerful National Security Council, with regard to the so-called isolation of Turkish Cypriots in Cyprus’ northern part which Turkey occupies, Lillikas said Turkey has never shown any respect to international law, on the contrary it reminds the UN and the EU that it violates this law and the sovereign rights of other nations, something the international community tolerates.

“This is nothing new on the part of Turkey. We, victims of this behaviour with the continuing occupation of the Republic’s northern part, will continue to work for an end of this occupation,” he concluded.
