It’s down, down for Cyprus tourism

On the basis of the results of the Passengers Survey, arrivals of tourists in Cyprus reached 273,058 in May 2007 compared to 283,513 in May 2006, recording a decrease of 3.7%.

This was the tenth consecutive month in which arrivals fell compared with the same month of 2006–a year in which arrivals fell by 2.8%.

In May a large fall of 8.9% was recorded in tourist arrivals from the United Kingdom (156,515 in May 2007 compared with 171,861 in May 2006) as well as an 8.0% decrease from Germany (14,826 compared to 16,107 last year).

On the other hand, an increase was recorded in tourist arrivals from Sweden, Russia and Greece.

For the period January-May 2007, arrivals of tourists totalled 681,632, compared with 718,161 in the corresponding period of 2006, recording a decrease of 5.1%.

The Statistical Service also announced that it published the annual report “Tourism Statistics” for 2005. The report provides detailed data on the movement of travellers, tourist flow, revenue from tourism, movement of permanent residents and overnight stays in tourist accommodation establishments.

In 2005, the number of tourists increased by 5.2% to 2,470,063.
