The Bank of Cyprus campaign offering to renew motorists’ circulation licenses online has paid off as the bank booked 75% of the record 200,000 renewals through the Internet.

The campaign raised record awareness for the online payment to the Dept. of Motor Vehicles by entering each renewal into a draw for a BMW X5 all-purpose vehicle.

The bank scooped its peers by collecting some CYP 12 mln (EUR 20.6 mln) of the CYP 16 mln (EUR 27.5 mln).

A further 50,000 road tax renewals were done online through the JCC payment clearing system’s JCCsmart portal that has automated the Ministry of Transport’s service in order to reduce administrative costs and the workload at the Dept. of Motor Vehicles and to make the process more efficient.

In all 450,000 road tax renewal notices were posted by the Dept. of which 400,000 have already been renewed, with the remainder believed to be vehicles parked in used-car lots.

According to press reports, more online payment services are to be added to the existing list of local municipal, water and sewage dues as well as phone bills, with the traffic violation fines and the EAC electricity bills also expected to be settled through the Internet soon.
