Cyprus produces more rubbish

The Statistical Service estimates that the total amount of municipal solid waste generated in 2005 stands at 553 thousand tonnes compared to 540 thousand tonnes in 2004, showing an increase of 2.5%.

From the total amount generated in 2005, 88.4% was delivered to landfills and the remaining 11.6% is estimated as having been collected for recycling.

The per capita generation of municipal solid waste in Cyprus during 2005 reached 730 kg and is one of the highest in the European Union, where an amount of 518 kg of waste is generated on average per inhabitant.

At similar levels as Cyprus are Ireland (740 kg), Denmark (737 kg) and Luxembourg (705 kg).
