Medicines up the most

Retail sales volumes climbed by 7% compared with the previous year in 2006, while retail sales value rose by 8.9% in the same period, according to provisional figures for December.

Final figures for November show that volumes rose by 6.9% year on year in that month, although they slipped compared with October.

For the whole of 2006 the biggest rise was recorded in sales of “Pharmaceuticals, cosmetics & toiletries”, which is thought to be dominated by sales of medicines. This category rose by 14.4% in volume terms in January-December.

The second biggest rise (13.9%) was recorded by sales in specialised stores where food, beverages & tobacco dominate.
