Professor Andreas Theophanous, Director General of the Research Center – Intercollege has been invited by the University of Tokyo to participate in an international symposium on “Ethnic Division of Polity and Society in Post-Civil War and Under-Conflict Nations: Cyprus, Lebanon, Former Yugoslavia, Iraq and Israel/Palestine”. The symposium to take place in Tokyo on 28 January is supported by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. Professor Theophanous will elaborate on the topic “Revisiting the Cyprus Question: The Challenge and the Promise”.

Referring to the symposium Theophanous noted that the issues to be discussed “are highly sensitive and relate to the standing concerns of the international community”. He commented that “inclusion of the Cyprus issue in the symposium is significant not only from an academic perspective but also because it would be presented in an environment which knows little about the issue”.

Theophanous described the invitation as indicative of the respect for the work of the Center. He said “the Center has a long-standing cooperation with think tanks in the United States, Europe and the Middle East but, this is the first time that its networking extends to the Far East”. For these reasons, said Theophanous, a working group has been set up for the mission and it was deemed appropriate that Emilios Solomou, Member of the Board of Directors of the Center and a member of the Cyprus Historical Studies Association also attends the symposium.
