Newly elected Archbishop of the Church of Cyprus, Bishop of Paphos Chrysostomos, has called on everybody to work together for the benefit of the Church and assured people, clergy and laymen, that he would be there for them.
Chrysostomos thanked all those who have worked so hard, in particular the Bishop of Limassol Athansios – his only opponent in the last phase of the election process – and Bishop of Kykkou Nikiforos who, once left out of the electoral process, gave his backing to Chrysostomos.
“I would like to thank my brothers in God, in particular the Bishop of Limassol and the Abbot of Kykko, because today I was elected to the post of Archbishop with their votes,” he said, in his first message after the official announcement of his electoral victory.
Chrysostomos got 73 votes and Athanasios 57, out of the 131 people of voted. One vote was invalid.
The new Archbishop assured that he would cooperate fully with them because there is a lot of work to do within the Church.
“I need everybody’s help and I would like to believe that your effort and love for the Church does not stop here,” he added.
He stressed that the door of his office will always be open for everybody and concluded “I will be everybody’s father, brother and friend”, assuring people that he would serve them and would be there for them when they need his help.
Today’s outcome was the conclusion of a long and complex process that began at the end of September and went through various phases.
