One-quarter of children in private schools

 

The number of Cypriot students abroad approached 20,000 in the academic year 2004/05, according to the latest education statistics from the Statistical Service, while almost one in four pupils/students are enrolled in private schools.

The data are included in the annual report “Statistics of Education” for the school year 2004/05.

The report provides detailed information regarding the number of educational institutions, pupils/students, teaching and non-teaching personnel and expenditure, at each level of education, as well as Cypriot students abroad.

 At all levels of education, there were 1,254 educational institutions, 174,018 pupils/students and 14,432 teachers, giving a pupil/teacher ratio of 12.1.

Of the total number of pupils/students, 75.5% were enrolled in public schools and 24.5% in private schools.

The enrolments of pupils/students by level of education were as follows: Pre-primary 27,028, Primary 61,247, Secondary 65,274, Tertiary 20,078 and Special education 391.

Cypriot students abroad totalled 19,400. Τheir distribution by level of education was as follows: tertiary non-university 909 or 4.7%; tertiary university undergraduate 16.464 or 84.9%; tertiary postgraduate (Master’s) 1,668 or 8.6%; and doctoral (Ph.D)

359 or 1.8%.

The most popular fields of study were: Social and behavioural sciences 12.1%, Humanities 11.0%, Business and Administration 11,8%, Health 10,4%, Engineering 9.7%, Teacher training and Education science 7.2% and Computing 5.7%.

The main countries of study were: Greece 65.3%, United Kingdom 20.4%, U.S.A. 5.1%, Hungary 1.3%, Russian Federation 0.9%, Bulgaria 2.7% and Germany 0.8%.

Public expenditure in public and private education for year 2004 stood at CYP 499.3 million, for all levels.

The current public cost per pupil/student in public schools by level of education was as follows: Pre-primary CYP 2,412, Primary CYP 1,987, Special CYP 14,692, Secondary CYP 3,644 and Tertiary CYP 6,965. The cost per student abroad was CYP 2,098.
