Indonesia reaffirms support towards Cyprus

President of Indonesia, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, expressed his country’s commitment to continue supporting the Republic of Cyprus and its efforts to reach a settlement of the longstanding Cyprus problem.

The President’s commitment was expressed during a ceremony in Jakarta, on the occasion of the presentation of the credentials of new Ambassador of Cyprus to Indonesia, Achilleas Antoniades, who is also High Commissioner of Cyprus to Australia.

According to an official press release, Antoniades briefed the Indonesian President on the recent developments regarding the Cyprus question and expressed the Cypriot government’s gratitude for Indonesia’s ‘consistent support for reaching a settlement of the Cyprus problem, a support that is based on the principles of respect of the national sovereignty, territorial integrity and international law, as well as on the traditionally excellent relations between both countries’.

“The President of Indonesia expressed his country’s commitment to continue supporting these principles’, the press release said.

During their meeting, they also discussed Cyprus’ role in the recent Middle East crisis.

The Cypriot Ambassador reaffirmed Cyprus’ readiness to offer Indonesia any facilities required related to its decision to participate in the United Nations Peace Force in Lebanon.

President Yudhoyono conveyed to Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos and to the people of Cyprus, his country’s gratitude for the assistance offered to the Indonesian tsunami victims.
