The Cyprus Bar Association announced that the backlog of cases pending in court has eased with the hiring of new judicial and administrative staff, including stenographers, as well as the appointment of new judges.

Responding to press and other reports that often refer to the delay in justice in Cyprus, Doros Ioannides, the president of the Bar Association said that the backlog phenomenon has eclipsed with the delayed cases already in trial or concluded.

“The Courts have reached a stage where the number of cases filed almost equals the number of cases tried,” he said in the announcement.

“In 2004 the number of civil, criminal, family court, labour dispute and military court cases reached 118,530 and 119,809 were tried the same year. In 2005 a total 127,570 cases were filed and 117,002 were tried.”

The Association’s president, however, warned that the rush to try all the cases should not be to the detriment of a fair trial.
