Cyprus imports climb 13.5% in Jan-April

Imports of goods shot up by 13.5% in January-April 2006 compared with the same period of 2005.

Total imports/arrivals, comprising imports from third (non-EU) countries and arrivals from other Member States amounted to CYP 1,018.8 mln in the first four months of 2006 as compared to CYP 897.3 mln in January-April 2005.

Total exports/dispatches, comprising total exports to third countries and dispatches to other Member States, rose by 5.3% in the same period.

In January-April 2006 they amounted to CYP 218.0 mln compared to CYP 207.0 mln in January-April 2005.

The trade deficit thus widened by almost 16% to CYP 800.7 mln in January-April 2006 compared to CYP 690.3 mln in January-April 2005.

April and May

During April 2006 total imports/arrivals amounted to CYP 251.3 mln, while in May, according to preliminary results, they reached CYP 278.0 mln, of which CYP 185.5 mln were arrivals from other Member States of EU and CYP 92.5 mln imports from third countries.

Total exports/dispatches including stores and provisions reached CYP 51.5 mln in April 2006 and a preliminary CYP 50.7 mln in May.
