The Council of Europe hopes to stimulate dialogue among local leaders in Cyprus, following the visit by the President of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the CoE Giovanni di Stasi to Cyrus on Thursday.

Di Stasi is understood to have met representatives of local authorities on both sides of the island.

Di Stasi said “the delegation of Cyprus in the Congress is very active and we have decided to organize this visit in order to contribute to the solution of this enormous European problem because this is not only a problem belonging to Cyprus and its population”.

“What we are trying to do now is to understand if there is a possibility for Mayors for citizens to take part in the reconciliation process, and we believe we can take an initiative.”

Di Stasi said that he was exploring a debate with citizens from September.

“We cannot accept to have the last capital in Europe as a divided capital,” said di Stasi.
