A small event is due today Thursday by the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) to reopen the Astromeritis-Zodhia crossing point (on the way to Morphou/Guzelyurt), which was closed in December for roadworks.

UNFICYP announced that following agreement by the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot sides, it will operate on a 24-hour basis.

The crossing point first opened in August 2005 in a move which was seen as unilateral by the Greek Cypriot side.

The UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus had closed the crossing point in December 2005 for a period of approximately six weeks to undergo roadwork and infrastructural improvements required under EU transportation standards.

The road works were facilitated by UNFICYP, funded by the EU and supervised by the United Nations Development Fund/Partnership for Peace (UNDP/PFF).
