No consensus was found during the G8 summit on energy security on Thursday.

The G8, which consists of the US, Japan, Canada, Russia, Germany, France, the UK and Italy, were divded over the issue of nuclear power, which is opposed by Germany (and a number of non-G8 EU members) but supported by Russia, the US and France, among others.

Russia, a nuclear power and a bit player in oil and gas exports, has proposed a scheme whereby any country can produce nuclear power under UN supervision. The US is reportedly not hostile to the idea.

There was less progress on agreeing an energy charter that would lay down rules for producers and consumers of energy, including introducing competition.
