Lazarides was honoured by the IOC Executive Board for his contribution to Cypriot and international sports, a statement by the COC said.

Awarding Lazarides with the medal, IOC President Jacques Rogge noted this was a great honour bestowed on persons in recognition of their extraordinary contribution to worldwide athletics and for their faith in the Olympic Ideals.
