The European Commission has kicked off a global internet blog aimed at increasing internet safety. The multilingual project is expected to involve participants from 33 countries, including Russia, New Zealand and Argentina.

During the so-called “blogathon”, celebrities, internet users and organisations active in promoting internet safety will post their ideas and comments on the website http://blog.eun.org/insafe/.

More than 300 national, regional and local events are also scheduled.

The blogging EU initiative “Safer Internet Day” aims at raising awareness and give internet users a platform to share experiences and cultural attitudes about their use of the worldwide web.

Around 70,000 new blogs are set up every day, the Commission said, but many young people were unaware of ethical, legal and safety issues. Posting of personal information and publishing of copyright material were causing concern, it underlined.
